Our heroes this week are Gary Mckitterick-Gillett and Beau Stewart who have just completed the trek to Mt Everest Base Camp, all to raise funds for Parkinson’s research. What an amazing effort – congratulations.
What Drives Your Commitment to find a cure for Parkinson’s?
My commitment to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease is inspired by two people, firstly a family friend who endures the Parkinson’s disease lifestyle every day, the tremors, the loss of motor function and ability to function as a normal human, and husband, albeit without complaint. He just finds a way to get on with life. And secondly, a former football coach of mine who now endures Parkinson’s disease causing a loss of confidence in speaking and interacting. Both of these gentlemen are making the most of their respective situations and improved treatments and/ or a cure would see them both enjoy their later years with their families. Beau has been inspired by a much closer PD connection with his grandmother enduring the blight of Parkinson’s disease. He endured the vagaries of altitude and remoteness to complete this mighty trek to Mt Everest Base Camp so as to inspire others, raise awareness and ultimately raise funds to help find a cure for PD.
Why Shake It Up Australia?
We chose Shake it Up Australia because of its credibility and its connection with the Michael J. Fox Foundation. 100% of all donations go to finding a cure and better treatments here in Australia.
Tell us what you are doing to Shake Things Up?
We trekked to the base camp of the world’s biggest and most famous mountain in our Shake it shirts – Mt Everest! At every opportunity we have talked about PD and Shake it Up and why we trekked to EBC. We have used FB, Linked in, work based social media and even made the local newspapers.
The greatest reward has been the look on people faces when we’ve explained what we are doing and why. The feedback we have received from our social media has also been very encouraging.
