Rod Barber has been holding onto something for 10 years – his beard! And he chose to shave it off to raise funds for Shake It Up. Fun runs aren’t for everyone and there are so many ways to fundraise towards a cure for Parkinson’s. If you’re thinking about fundraising for Shake It Up and not sure where to start, have a read of Rod’s story and be inspired to think outside of the box!
What Drives Your Commitment to find a cure for Parkinson’s?
My grandfather and my godfather’s sister battled Parkinson’s for many years, never giving up on the possibility that a cure would one day be found. It is something that is never far from my thoughts.
Why Shake It Up Australia?
I’ve been looking for something locally to support Parkinson’s research for a number of years, but had not seen much. A recent fundraiser that a local brewery was doing in support of Shake It Up, brought it to my attention. Once I saw the information on your site and the linkages with the Michael J Fox Foundation, I knew I was on the right track.
Tell us what you are doing/did to Shake Things Up?
I shaved off my beard that I’ve had for the past 10 years! So far I’ve kept it off for over a month.
My kids had not seen me without a beard!
A small act of shaving has helped support a great cause. Aside from that, I’ve had compliments saying I look 10-20 years younger! Some people I work with didn’t recognise me 🙂

What ever you are thinking of doing, give it a go. Keeping it fun helped me. Every little bit helps.
