This week’s Shake It Up Hero is Leanne Rance. Leanne formed the group ‘Team Shakers’ to compete in the NewRun fun-run in Newcastle, NSW. And what started out as a small challenge turned into a group event which helped to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease in the Hunter region as well as raising funds to find a cure for Parkinson’s!
I am driven to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease because I want to help people like my mum, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s about 15 yrs ago at just 42. When mum was diagnosed it was such a shock to our family, I felt helpless, the only thing I could do was to learn more about Parkinson’s and to get involved with fundraising to help find a cure for people with P.D.
Why Shake It Up Australia?
The Shake It Up Australia Foundation was an easy choice to support because they are doing so much to raise awareness for Parkinson’s. The Shake It Up team have been so supportive and so easy to work alongside to reach all our goals of raising money and awareness for P.D.
Tell us what you are doing to Shake Things Up?
This year I decided to challenge myself to participate in a 10km run to raise money for The Shake it up Foundation. I have never been a runner let alone done a 10km run, so this is a big challenge for me. I managed to recruit some other runners too so we made the group ‘Team Shakers.’
The whole team experience has been overwhelming. To see friends of mine who had no idea about Parkinson’s yet they were keen to jump on board and help support this great cause , raise money and awareness, plus help support me is just so touching. I am so lucky to have beautiful friends in my life.
Best advice for people looking to Shake It Up?
My advice to anyone starting jogging is to be consistent with your training, run even when you don’t feel like it, and you will be surprised how quickly your fitness level increases and how much you enjoy it. Have fun and remember if you train consistently it gets easier and easier.
