This week’s Shake It Up Hero has honoured her Dad by completing a half marathon and in the process raised $1000 for Parkinson’s research.

1. What Drives Your Commitment to find a cure for Parkinson’s?

My Dad suffered from Parkinson’s for around 10 years and sadly passed away from this in February this year.
It’s such a cruel disease and effects so many people in so many different ways, I want to be able to assist any way I can to try and help raises funds to find a cure for Parkinson’s so that other individuals and families don’t have to experience this.

2. Why Shake It Up Australia?

I heard about Shake It Up through TV/media, after reading up on it myself I thought it was such a great organisation that seemed so involved in research to find a cure. The fact that Michael J Fox is also involved in this organisation also gives it more publicity, exposure and hopefully more fundraising ability.  I was also really impressed that 100% of the fundraising money goes directly where it’s needed – research!

3. Tell us what you are doing to Shake Things Up?

I’ve just completed SMH ½ Marathon in Sydney, running in my Dad’s memory.  I had been considering registering to do this run as a personal challenge but when Dad passed away I decided I wanted to do it in his honour and use it as an opportunity to raise funds for Shake It Up.   So I set up a ‘Go Fundraise’ page, shared it on Facebook, emailed and spoke to as many people as I could to get donations.  I raised around $1000 which I was really happy with.  By sharing it on a Facebook Running Group page, I found so many other members who had immediate family members suffering from Parkinson’s but they weren’t aware of Shake It Up – by making them aware of your organisation a number of them said they would register to raise funds on future runs.  I’m happy that I’ve been able to raise the awareness of Shake It Up in this way.

4. Greatest Reward?

I think the greatest reward for doing this was being able to make more people aware of Shake It Up and therefore potentially be able to increase future fundraising dollars.

5. Best advice for people looking to Shake It Up?

Definitely just get in there and do it, register for Shake It Up events or fundraising and then get the message out by speaking to as many people as possible and sharing it on social media.
