Monday, 9th September 2024

This October, Shake It Up supporter Thomas will be participating in the Bike-Around-The-Bay event to raise money for Shake It Up Australia. His big fundraising effort will involve cycling a loop around the Port Philip Bay comprising of ~220KMs! We spoke to Thomas all about his fundraising journey, what inspires his support for Parkinson’s research, and more.

Tell us all about your upcoming Bike-Around-The-Bay event! Is this the first time you will take on a cycling challenge like this?

The Bike-Around-The-Bay event is just around the corner, and I’m thrilled to share that this will be my first time participating in this cycling challenge. After injuring my meniscus a few years ago, I transitioned from running to cycling, which has become a new passion of mine.

The ride will take me on a scenic journey around the bay, offering breathtaking views and a rewarding experience. I’m hopeful that the weather will cooperate and not be too windy, so I can fully enjoy the beauty of the route. This challenge holds special significance for me as it combines my love for exercise with my commitment to a cause close to my heart.

What sort of training are you doing?

For the Bike-Around-The-Bay event, my training regimen is a blend of road biking and using an exercise bike. On weekends, I focus on road biking to build endurance and get accustomed to the demands of long rides. During the week, I complement this with sessions on the exercise bike in my home office. This combination helps me stay on track with my fitness goals and prepares me for the challenges of the event.

What drives your commitment to fundraise for Parkinson’s?

Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, which is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing neurological conditions in Australia. Personally, my family and I have been deeply affected by Parkinson’s, with several cases among us. Professionally, I work with PKG Health, where our goal is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with Parkinson’s through our technology. Exercise is a highly effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Although regular physical activity benefits everyone, it is especially crucial for those with Parkinson’s. Research indicates that exercise helps maintain balance, strengthen muscles, and improve mobility in individuals with Parkinson’s. Additionally, studies suggest that exercise can lower the risk of developing Parkinson’s and slow its progression.

Why did you choose to raise funds for Shake It Up Australia?

Fundraising for Shake It Up Australia is a meaningful way to support critical research and improve the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease. This organisation is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and treatment options for Parkinson’s, a condition that impacts many individuals and their families. By raising funds, I help fuel research efforts aimed at finding better treatments and ultimately a cure. Additionally, Shake It Up Australia works to raise awareness about the disease and promote strategies for managing it, such as the importance of exercise.

What is your advice for others hoping to make a difference for people with Parkinson’s?

If you’re looking to make a difference for people with Parkinson’s, remember that many of us know someone affected by this condition. As we age, the prevalence of Parkinson’s is increasing, making it more relevant to us all. There are many ways to get involved, and every action counts.

Personally, I’ve found that wearing the Shake It Up Australia merchandise, like their T-shirt, during my practice rides is a great way to contribute. Not only does it show my support, but it also sparks conversations with fellow cyclists. It’s a fantastic talking point that raises awareness and encourages others to learn more about Parkinson’s and how they can help.

Whether it’s through participating in events, supporting research, or simply wearing awareness gear, everyone can make a difference. Small efforts, like engaging in conversations or supporting a cause, can lead to meaningful change for those living with Parkinson’s.
