Eight Years of Impact: How MediRecords has United with Shake It Up to Support Research

MediRecords is a cloud-based practice and patient management platform designed for the Australian healthcare ecosystem. It operates as a trusted partner to Australian health providers, corporate enterprises, and government organisations. Since 2019, the company has also played an important role in supporting Shake It Up to fund vital research and offer hope and support to the Parkinson’s community. Over the last 8 years, not only has MediRecords contributed over $30,000 to research, but the team has dedicated their time to increasing awareness about Parkinson’s disease both inside and outside the company.

From Pancakes to Pizza Parties: A Team Effort

As a corporate sponsor of Shake It Up’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month campaign, MediRecords has regularly gone the extra step to host internal fundraising events that gather their team around the cause.

From Pancake brunches to Pizza Picnics, it’s a powerful way for staff to come together and learn more about the Shake It Up Australia Foundation, and the impact of research on those living with Parkinson’s. Senior Business Development Manager, Tim Pegler, says, “MediRecords has a real social conscience and commitment to improving outcomes in healthcare. Our support for Shake It Up is a natural extension of this and one we are proud to contribute to.”

Driven by a Profound Personal Connection

For CEO and Founder of MediRecords, Matthew Galetto, this partnership is particularly meaningful. “Our company’s decision to support the Shake It Up Foundation is deeply rooted in both personal connections and a shared commitment to making a difference in health”, he says. “The Foundation, with its focus on finding treatments and cures for Parkinson’s disease, aligns with our values. The founders of Shake It Up, Carolyn and Clyde, are long-standing family friends with shared experiences over 25 years, adding profound personal dimension to our support.”

There are others in the team who also have a deeply personal reason to support the cause. For Tim, Parkinson’s Awareness Month took on extra significance when his father received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

Tim told us about the unexpected diagnosis, and the profound impact it has had on his father’s quality of life. “Dad has had an essential tremor for most of his life and we thought this was getting worse with age. It took us a while to realise bigger things were happening. Dad is now dealing with muscle rigidity and tremor, along with aspects of Parkinson’s that aren’t as well known. The real heartbreak has been loss of language, both written and spoken.  Dad won’t be able to complete the memoir he was writing and now deals with the daily devastation of not being able to fully communicate his thoughts. It’s extremely tough to watch and a reminder of the importance of research into this disease.”

A Shared Mission to Make a Difference

Both organisations share a goal to make a difference and improve health outcomes for the Australian community. MediRecords also shares our values of collaboration, integrity, innovation, and drive. That’s why it has been important for them to not only contribute funds to research, but increase awareness about the disease; both within their company and their community.

Parkinson’s is still often misunderstood, with many symptoms unseen or underrecognised. But for those living with the disease – and their loved ones – they can be deeply challenging. “Parkinson’s can mean more than shaky hands”, Tim says. “There are different forms of the disease, some with frightening symptoms, such as terrifying hallucinations, nightmares, and impaired cognition. It can be horrific for those with the disease, and their families.”

For this reason, building understanding and contributing to research that can slow or stop progression is something MediRecords is proud to contribute to. Their advice for other companies wanting to get involved and help out their community?

“We can all be distracted by daily tasks and challenges and forget we have the power to impact the world we share. Maybe one fewer meeting could make time for a discussion on ways your organisation can help change environmental, social or health outcomes. Donations add up, no matter how small. Being part of a community that cares, matters.”

100% of all donations Shake It Up receives from corporate sponsors go directly to research to slow, stop and cure Parkinson’s disease. For Tim and his family, anything that slows the progression of the disease would mean the world. “That could mean fewer unfinished conversations and more shared experiences. You cannot put a price on giving families more quality time together.”

Shake It Up wouldn’t be where it is today without our generous supporters, and we have been fortunate to have the corporate community behind us on our journey. We thank MediRecords for their ongoing support.
