When Emily set out to challenge herself with a 200km walking and running goal over 30 days, she knew it would push her physically and mentally. But for her, the cause was far greater than the challenge. Inspired by her Nana’s recent Parkinson’s diagnosis and the stories of other fundraisers, Emily took on this mission to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research through Shake It Up.
Despite injuries and setbacks, she persevered—clocking an incredible 203.09km and nearly 400,000 steps in November 2024. Her dedication is a testament to the power of purpose-driven action, and we are thrilled to share her story.

I was looking into a fundraiser that raised awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease and I came across the Shake It Up Foundation and thought, what better way than to set up a goal of my own? I decided to set a challenge to walk or run 200kms over 30 days in November—this averaged out to be 6.6kms a day.
It was challenging, to say the least. Some days, the mental game to get out and complete my daily figure was tough. It was a balance of getting it done before going about the rest of my day, depending on if I had plans. Towards the end of the month, I ended up developing plantar fasciitis as well as a flare-up from a past injury. But I knew this was just short-term, and I could push through with support from physios and chiropractors.
I managed to succeed, ending with a total of 203.09km and 399,437 steps while raising funds of $1,522 — with the biggest support from friends and family.
What inspires your commitment to fundraise for Parkinson’s research?
I was inspired by previous stories mentioned on the website, other fundraisers you can take part in for a good cause—and if it helps find a cure, I am 100% onboard!
Why did you choose to support Shake It Up?
I chose to support Shake It Up Foundation on behalf of my Nana, who has just recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. I see the effects it has on her doing daily activities, and for that, I wanted to make a change to help find a cure.
What is your advice for others wanting to make a difference?
Just do it! What have you got to lose? It’s even better doing it on behalf of someone who might be affected by this disease, knowing you are trying to make an impact for future funding.
Emily’s journey is a reminder that small steps – literally and figuratively – can lead to big change. Her fundraising page remains open for those who want to contribute towards life-changing Parkinson’s research.
