When it comes to turning passion into impact, Gary McKitterick-Gillett is living proof that one person can spark a movement.
In the 2025 Parkinson’s Awareness, Gary was yet again one of the top fundraisers for Shake It Up — combining global adventure with local community action to raise more than $50,000 for Australian Parkinson’s research.
Gary, founder of Trek Ready Himalayas and long-time Shake It Up supporter, led a team of 19 Australians on the epic Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal. Together, they reached a staggering 5,416m elevation across the Thorong La Pass — trekking for a cause that’s close to Gary’s heart.
Ranging in age from 16 to 73, the team raised awareness and funds through pancake stalls, BBQs, raffles, and community talks — building connection at home while preparing for the challenge of a lifetime abroad.
“The greatest achievement this year has been the conversations held, the barriers broken down, and of course the money raised,” Gary shared.
Their effort will have a truly lasting impact, with their huge fundraising contribution going directly into life-changing studies – a testament to how purpose can fuel even the hardest climbs.
Closer to home, Gary joined forces with Damien Said, owner of Century 21 Duporth, to launch the first-ever Swing for Parkinson’s Golf Day — an idea that started as a sponsorship and quickly grew into a powerful, community-driven campaign.
Backed by the Century 21 national network, the event included 18 sponsored holes, live and silent auctions, and over 30 local businesses rallying behind the cause. The result? This single event generated more than $23,000 for Shake It Up — and new awareness driven across an entirely fresh network of supporters.
“This has been the catalyst to take us to a new level with our exposure and fundraising,” Gary said.
From the peaks of Nepal to the greens of Queensland, Gary’s unwavering energy and commitment continue to fuel vital research — and show just how much one person can do when they choose to lead.
Thank you, Gary — for walking the walk, swinging the swing, and being the change. Donate today and let’s keep Gary’s momentum going.
