Shake It Up Australia Foundation Receives Outstanding Achievement Recognition at The Australian Charity Awards 2024

Shake It Up Australia Foundation is delighted to have been awarded Outstanding Achievement in The Australian Charity Awards 2024. This prestigious accolade acknowledges charitable organisations that achieve exceptional results through initiatives that make a significant impact on their cause.

Since its inception in 2011, the Shake It Up Australia Foundation, in partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF), has led the charge in accelerating research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

“Receiving this recognition is a testament to the dedication of our community, our researchers, and every individual who has contributed to our mission,” said Clyde Campbell AM, Founder of Shake It Up Australia Foundation.

“As someone living with Parkinson’s myself, I know firsthand the urgency to find better treatments and a cure. This award reflects our collective determination to make that a reality.”

Driving transformative research

Shake It Up Australia Foundation has supported groundbreaking initiatives like the Australian Parkinson’s Genetics Study (APGS), a nationwide research project run by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane and funded by Shake It Up and MJFF. The study contributes to the Global Parkinson’s Genetics Program (GP2), the largest genetic study of Parkinson’s worldwide.

With over 9,000 participants with Parkinson’s disease and 2,500 without Parkinson’s enrolled so far, APGS is helping scientists uncover the genetic basis of the disease—an essential step in revolutionising future treatments.

“Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological disorder in the world, and in Australia alone, over 200,000 people are living with its debilitating effects,” added Clyde. “The Australian Parkinson’s Genetics Study is a game-changer in understanding the disease. By identifying the genetic factors, we’re unlocking new pathways for treatments and, ultimately, a cure.”

Shake It Up’s Catalyst Programme velocity (CPv) has been instrumental in identifying and funding promising Australian research projects, ensuring significant advancements in the understanding and treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Commitment to change

This recognition highlights Shake It Up’s impact not only on research but also on raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease across Australia. By engaging both individuals living with Parkinson’s and those without the condition in studies like APGS, Shake It Up has highlighted the true power of collaboration in driving progress.

“Our mission is to empower Australians to be part of finding the answers we need. Whether through funding research, participating in studies, or raising awareness, every effort contributes to the fight against Parkinson’s,” said Clyde.
