When it comes to raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s research, Warren doesn’t back down from a challenge. Recently, Warren took on not one, but two grueling races—the Sydney Marathon and the Bondi to Manly Ultra Marathon—to support Shake It Up Australia Foundation and honor his mother-in-law, Sandra, who has been living with Parkinson’s for over 20 years.
From running across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge to navigating the breathtaking yet demanding coastline from Bondi to Manly, Warren’s journey is as inspiring as his commitment to making a difference. In this Q&A, Warren shares what drives him, why he chose Shake It Up, and his advice for anyone looking to make an impact.
Tell us about your fundraising challenge/event
I set myself the goal of completing two races 1/ The Sydney Marathon, 42km starting in North Sydney and ending at the Opera House – now one of the major marathons in the world and one of the only times you can run across the middle of the harbour bridge with no cars 2/ The Bondi to Manly Ultra Marathon, 80km along, arguably the most beautiful coastline in the world. Training for these two races required was intense particularly as they were 6 weeks apart and were so different in terms of terrain and elevation.
What inspires your commitment to fundraise for Parkinson’s research?
Sandra, my wonderful mother-in-law was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 20 years ago and has been extremely fortunate to have been able to access medical treatment that helped provide her with years of quality life. Her condition is unfortunately no longer able to be controlled with the currently available treatments and it’s become increasingly challenging over the last few years. I’ve seen this decline and having done my own research on the disease know that it is possible to reduce its impact and eventually prevent it if we continue to invest in research.
Why did you choose to support Shake It Up?
I’m normally skeptical of charities and how much of the funds raised are actually used to help the cause but the fact that Shake It Up passes on 100% of the funds to raised to research is exceptional. I wanted to ensure that my donors saw their funds contributing directly to the cause. I am also an 80’s child and grew up with Michael J Fox as an inspiration so seeing Shake It Up’s association with him made a huge difference for me.
What is your advice for others wanting to make a difference?
Taking on something that pushes you outside of your comfort zone will make the fundraising even more meaningful and rewarding. Publicly stating your challenge early on and committing to your goal will create the psychological push to motivate you through even the most extreme of physical challenges.
