After the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural event, Newcastle local Steph Long is once again rallying her community in support of Parkinson’s research with the return of Good Vibrations—a heartfelt 5km walk along the coast to raise funds for the Shake It Up Australia Foundation.
The event was born from personal experience. Steph’s mum was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a life-changing moment that inspired Steph to take action. As shared in last year’s feature article Good Vibrations 24 Shakes It Up for Parkinson’s Research, what began as a simple idea to walk with friends and family grew into a powerful show of community, hope and resilience.
“With such a great response last year and seeing how empowered mum felt, it was an easy decision to host Good Vibrations for its second year,” Steph says. “Last year we saw so many friends and family come together to share their support and story—it was so inspirational to never give up and live life to its fullest.”
Last year’s walk saw people of all ages (and many dogs) hit the Newcastle Foreshore to support those living with Parkinson’s and honour their loved ones. The highlight? Watching Dianne reconnect with old friends and make new ones within the Parkinson’s community.
“There were so many highlights from last year,” Steph recalls. “My mum reconnected with so many friends she had not seen in years. We met new people in the community living with Parkinson’s Disease or supporting loved ones who also got to share their story.”
This year’s event will take place on Saturday 13 April 2025, starting at Queens Wharf and ending at Bar Beach Bowling Club, where a celebration will welcome everyone at the finish line. The route winds through Newcastle’s stunning coastline, and participants are invited to walk, run, roll or stroll—whatever works for them.
For Steph, inclusivity is everything. If you or a loved one can’t join the walk, you’re still encouraged to meet at the finish line or take part from afar.
“We want the chance to bring everyone together to make the event as inclusive as possible. If you or your loved one cannot participate in the walk, please meet us at the finish line to celebrate. If you cannot participate in the day, share your walk from wherever you may be! We have friends from all over the world joining us on a 5km run to be part of Good Vibrations.”
Funds raised go directly to Shake It Up Australia Foundation, which partners with The Michael J. Fox Foundation to back world-class Australian research into better treatments—and ultimately, a cure—for Parkinson’s.
Last year’s event raised thousands of dollars and brought visibility to the strength and vibrancy of the Parkinson’s community in Newcastle and beyond. This year, Steph hopes to go even further.
“It’s about bringing people together, showing support, and reminding others they’re not alone. That’s what Good Vibrations is all about.”
