Marty Cobcroft and Andy Payne are Australian music veterans who first met in the early 1990s. Since then they have been collaborating creatively for over 30 years. Together, they also share a personal mission to make a difference. With the release of their new song, ‘Still’, from the doubleTROUBLE EP, the two musicians will donate 50% of all net royalties to Shake It Up to propel research.
“I’ve been living with Parkinson’s since 2018”, Marty told us. “Andy’s mum and Grandmother also lived with Parkinson’s, so it’s as personal as it gets, as far as motivation goes. Even if it raises a modest amount, it will only benefit us all – those who live with Parkinson’s, and those who are our carers, health professionals and volunteers.”
We spoke with Marty to find out more about what inspired the song, and their passion for supporting research.
My wonderful, caring kind wife, Amanda. She heard me having a coughing fit over 6 hours one night and just quietly came and held my shoulders until it eased.
There have been many times where this has occurred, hence the lyric:
Don’t forget the times when I shook against the storms / Your hands on my shoulders, our eyes fixed on that hill.
I’ve been living with Parkinson’s since 2018. Andy’s mum and Grandmother also lived with Parkinson’s, so it’s as personal as it gets, as far as motivation goes. We want to see more done in funding and finding a cure, not just new treatments to ease symptoms. I am grateful for any positive developments, but a cure would be fantastic. I like what Shake it Up does and the great ethos behind it.
Every day in Australia, 38 people are going to go home from a neurologist knowing that their lives have changed forever. But they must not lose hope and they must keep moving, despite how hard it gets.
There are great people doing great things to find more comfort and ultimately, a cure, so hope is very important.
I think the work that the Shake It Up Australia Foundation does both directly and indirectly is immensely encouraging and maybe even a little miraculous – I’m a recipient of DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) surgery and the misery it has removed I could never articulate. The “Dream Team” at Westmead Hospital gave me back my life, even it’s only for a while.
Use it to enhance your strengths, and try to stay calm because being still with Parkinson’s is a luxury we don’t often get. Keep your friendships and relationships honest and open and don’t fight it, there’s nothing but darkness that way.
Just accept it and remind yourself of who you really are. You are a valuable life to those who care for you. Now is the time for rest, careful planning and calmness.
