For Rebecca, Christmas is more than decorations and celebrations—it’s a chance to make a difference. Inspired by her father’s journey with Parkinson’s disease, Rebecca began her annual Christmas lights display as a way to bring her community together while raising funds for Parkinson’s research.
The idea came to Rebecca two years ago, sparked by a family friend who created a similar display to raise awareness for DIPG, a rare form of brain cancer. “That display got me thinking—maybe I could do something like this for Parkinson’s,” Rebecca explains. “It started as a small idea, but then I thought, maybe, just maybe, I can get some donations for Parkinson’s too.”
Now in its second year, Rebecca’s lights display has grown into a beloved community tradition. With the support of her local community, including the town’s local MP who has helped spread the word, Rebecca is making a meaningful impact.
Her fundraising efforts are deeply personal. “My dad has had Parkinson’s for about 10 years, though we think he may have had it for much longer,” Rebecca shares. “Doing something to support him is really important to me—it’s a big part of my heart.”
When it came to choosing Shake It Up Australia Foundation to fundraise for, “Shake It Up just stood out to me,” Rebecca says. “I wanted to ensure the money raised would go directly to Parkinson’s research.”
Rebecca’s dazzling lights not only brighten her neighborhood but also shine a light on the urgent need for research and support for the 200,000 Australians living with Parkinson’s.
