Sophie Raises $21,000 in a 21km Run for Research

Tuesday, 17th March 2026

In 2018, Sophie’s father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “From that moment, our world changed”, she says. Eight years later Sophie decided to take on the challenge of a half-marathon to support cutting-edge research that would be life-changing for her family. Sophie told us all about her experience taking part in the run, how her Dad inspired her determination to make a difference, and her advice for others wanting to change the future.

Sophie, tell us all about running the half-marathon! How was it?

Running the half-marathon was incredibly tough – but I finished it, and in a time of which I am genuinely proud. I had trained consistently all year and was finally feeling confident about completing the full 21.1km without stopping.

Then, just four weeks out, I injured my back, bringing all my training to an abrupt halt in the lead-up to race day.

Despite the injury, I was determined to see it through. A huge part of that determination came from my Dad. Knowing I was running for him gave me the strength to keep going – I didn’t want to let him down. That motivation carried me across the finish line.

What was the highlight of the whole experience?

The highlight of the entire experience was raising over $21,000 for a Foundation that is incredibly close to my heart. Knowing that my efforts are contributing, even in a small way, toward finding a cure for Parkinson’s makes me immensely proud. That impact means far more to me than the finish time ever could.

Why did you choose to raise funds for Shake It Up?

Watching someone you love navigate a progressive condition like Parkinson’s is incredibly difficult. Over the years, we’ve seen the way it affects him physically and emotionally. The daily challenges, the loss of independence, and the impact it has on his quality of life.

But Parkinson’s doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed; it touches the entire family. It reshapes routines, priorities and the way you look at the future. Seeing his gradual decline has been heartbreaking, and it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

Since his diagnosis, our family has been committed to supporting the Shake It Up Australia Foundation in any way we can. For me, the fundraising was about showing my Dad that I am fighting with him and anyone else suffering, and doing whatever small part I can to help create change. If my efforts can bring us even one step closer to a cure, then every kilometre and every dollar raised is worth it.

Our mission is to slow, stop and cure Parkinson’s disease. What would this mean to you?

It would mean more time with my Dad. More shared moments. More memories not overshadowed by the progression of this disease.

It would mean hope replacing uncertainty, and strength replacing fear.

What is your advice for someone else wanting to make a difference for the Parkinson’s community?

My advice is simple – just start. There’s no harm in trying, and you might be surprised by the support you receive once you put yourself out there. No matter how much you raise, it truly makes a difference.

Every single dollar contributes to vital research and brings us one step closer to better treatments and ultimately, a cure.

You can make a donation or start your own fundraiser to support Shake It Up this April. Every dollar counts in the quest for a cure, and 100% of donations raised will go directly to cutting-edge researchers here in Australia. Click here to get involved today.
