Tim Runs a Half Marathon for his Mum
Sunday, 19th May 2019

Inspired by the impact of Parkinson’s on his mum, Tim Ashelford is running a half marathon this weekend to fundraise for Shake It Up. And he’s got some great advice for those looking to ‘shake it up’!

What Drives Your Commitment to find a cure for Parkinson’s?

Seeing the impact Parkinson’s has had on my Mum and realising how many people were affected by it. It can be easy to feel helpless against diseases without cures, but modern medical science is incredibly powerful. In my mind it’s not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’, and we’ll only get there through a sustained effort.

Why Shake It Up Australia?

I instantly liked the vibe of Shake It Up Australia. From the commitment by the founders to cover admin costs (ensuring donations go towards research) to the strategic partnering with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. It’s really good to see charities operating in an efficient way and from the chats I’ve had with the crew so far, I can tell they’re really passionate about the cause.

Tell us what you are doing to Shake Things Up

I’m running a road half marathon (hopefully in under 90 minutes). I’ve been trail running for a few years but the ability to raise money for Parkinson’s research gave me the drive to enter my first competition. Transitioning to road running has shaken it up quite a bit (mostly shaken my quads!) but I’m feeling way stronger and faster now. Can’t wait for Sunday!

Greatest Reward?

I was genuinely overwhelmed by the response when I first posted about fundraising for Shake It Up – friends and family were so quick to donate that I had to double my goal. Now I’ve had even further reaching donations and people sharing around my cause who I’ve never met. It really means a lot to bring people together like this. I’ve also donated to a few friend’s campaigns I’ve seen and it feels fantastic to give back.

Best advice for people looking to Shake It Up?

Think of ways to stand out. Whether it’s attempting something you haven’t done before, doing it in a wacky way or encouraging participation from your network. And don’t be afraid to put yourself out there – people are super keen to get involved and support the cause.
