Kevin treks Bay of Fires for his wife
Friday, 5th February 2021

Over the next few weeks we’ll be featuring our Bay of Fires participants who will be trekking through Tasmania to raise funds for Parkinson’s. You’ve already met Steve who used his artistic skills to help raise funds.

Today, we’re introducing you to Kevin! Kevin is walking Bay of Fires for his wife, Pauline who has Parkinson’s, and to raise funds towards a cure. Have a read of his story below.

What drives your commitment to a cure for Parkinson’s?

My wife was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018 so it is personal. I work actively with our local support group and have made several good friends within the group who are PWP or carers. I want to see positive progress towards a cure to help all of us. I also volunteer on the Consumer Advisory Group with Parkinson’s Australia to work on what needs to be done to provide the best outcomes and improve life for those impacted by Parkinson’s Disease.

Why Shake It Up and the Bay of Fire trek?

Once I became “involved” in the Parkinson’s community I found out how much work Shake It Up does to progress research and that ALL the funds raised go to this research. I have seen the fundraising treks previously and thought about taking part but they were overseas or the timing was not right. Tasmania is a favourite place of ours so once I saw the Bay of Fires Trek I was in!

What are you looking forward to most about the trek?

There are several “mosts” but mainly the experience of doing the trek with a group of other committed people who are part of the Parkinson’s community. Getting some exercise, raising money and awareness of Parkinson’s and doing it in a beautiful part of the world are added bonuses.

What advice do you have for others looking to fundraise and make a difference?

The best time to do it is NOW. The funds are needed NOW. The research is needed NOW. If you are even thinking about it NOW then it is the right time.

Although the Bay of Fires trek is fully booked, you can still make a difference for people with Parkinson’s.

Challenge yourself for Parkinson’s by taking on a running, walking or other physical challenge and getting your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. 100% of the funds you raise will go to Parkinson’s research. Find out more today.
